The International Security Assistance Force spokesperson, German Brigadier General Carsten Jacobson, expressed his heartfelt congratulations for the recent celebration of Afghanistan’s 92nd Independence Day.
The celebration of Afghan Independence, only a few days after the beginning of the process of transition, has particular symbolic value, said Jacobson.
“Together we are moving forward to a safer and brighter future for Afghanistan and its people, he added. “The people of Afghanistan will remain unshaken by those who are trying to stop the freedom and peace coming to this land.”
ISAF and Afghan Forces vie to continue the transition process as the summer draws to a close.
“We are looking at the developments of the year so far, said Jacobson.” “We will continue to welcome a marked decline in violence throughout Afghanistan, compared to this time last year.”
Throughout 2011 ISAF has seen significant security improvements throughout Afghanistan, including:
• Violence is down in 12 of the past 16 weeks as compared to the same period in 2010
• During the first six months of 2011, insurgents conducted approximately 20 percent fewer complex attacks than in 2010
• Cache finds have totaled 2.5 times the number of those reported over the same period in 2010
• Civilian casualties are down 14 percent in the last three months, compared to the first three months of the year
Jacobson attributes these successes to the joint efforts of the Afghan and coalition forces, and to an increasing support by the people of Afghanistan, who are tired of all the fighting and the murders.
Afghan and ISAF forces continue to press the insurgents hard and hold key areas, especially in the south where insurgent activity has been most active in years past.
“Without much noise and friction the campaign is showing more and more of an Afghan face,” said Jacobson. “The Afghanistan nationals and local security forces are stepping forward and taking the future of their country in their hands, where it belongs.”
Jacobson concluded that ISAF will continue to move forward through cooperation and friendship to a mutual objective of a peaceful and stable Afghanistan in the years to come.
