GHAZNI PROVINCE, Afghanistan - In an effort to increase crop yield, livestock health and produce power, the Ghazni Polish Provincial Reconstruction Team plans to build a water dam in Nawur District within the next year.
Because Nawur is a very mountainous district of Afghanistan, the water which runs through the area does not remain in the region for very long.
“During most of year people cope with draught,” said Przemyslaw Kapuscinski, Polish PRT irrigation and water management specialist. “It is a serious problem because they make a living by agriculture.”
Currently, because of the lack of water in the area, the vegetation period is only five months long, which causes crops yields to be smaller compared to other districts. The dam will give locals access to water all year. Additionally, the slowing of the water in the area will cause the water table to rise.
“The investment means benefit not only for local farmers, but also for breeders who will be able to pasture herds longer,” said Kapuscinski.
The water dam will be built in Hokopi Valley of Marbulagh village.
“The project is very similar to the one executed last year for the village Tarbulagh,” said Polish Maj. Pawel Chabielski, Polish PRT commander. “This year we are going to implement the water dam and water collected in it for electricity production by providing it with hydropower turbine.
“Thanks to this project three neighboring villages will be provided with power,” Chabielski added.
The Polish PRT also has plans to complete the same project in Marbulagh the following year.
“We are planning to construct a small building intended for a future hydropower turbine,” said Kapuscinski. “Because of the length of each project, we cannot complete both at the same time.”
