The Department of Defense announced today one Army brigade combat team to deploy as part of the upcoming rotation of forces operating in Afghanistan. The scheduled early Winter 2012 rotation involves nearly 3,900 soldiers from the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.
This week the Army, Navy and Air Force announced a decrease in activated reservists, while the Marine Corps and Coast Guard announced an increase. The net collective result is 628 fewer reservists activated than last week.
At any given time, services may activate some units and individuals while deactivating others, making it possible for these figures to either increase or decrease. The total number currently on active duty from the Army National Guard and Army Reserve is 51,056; Navy Reserve, 4,586; Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, 10,146; Marine Corps Reserve, 4,731, and the Coast Guard Reserve, 834. This brings the total National Guard and Reserve personnel who have been activated to 71,353, including both units and individual augmentees.
