BAGRAM, Afghanistan (Aug 12, 2012) – Insurgents caused 94 civilian casualties in eastern Afghanistan during the first 10 days of August, despite the fact it is Ramazan. They killed 24 Afghans and injured 70.
Logar Province suffered the most losses to insurgent attacks with a total of 12 civilians killed, two of whom were children, and 41 wounded.
Mohammad Tahir Sabari, Logar provincial governor, condemned the insurgents’ targeting and killing innocent civilians with the strongest terms.
“Insurgents actions caused many innocent civilians deaths and injuries, especially in the holy month of Ramazan,” said Sabari. “This is totally un-Islamic and inhuman.”
The governor offered his condolences to the families of the victims and said he prays for the speedy recovery of the wounded.
According to a recent report published by the United Nations, insurgents were responsible for more than 80 percent of the civilian causalities in 2012.
Despite the efforts of the enemies of the Government of Afghanistan, ISAF forces in eastern Afghanistan remain committed to partnering with their Afghan National Security Forces counterparts to secure a stable and prosperous future for the Afghan people.
