The Department of Defense announced today the death of three soldiers who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
They died April 6 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit in Zabul, Afghanistan with a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device. They were assigned to the 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armor Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.
Killed were:
Staff Sgt. Christopher M. Ward, 24, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Spc. Wilbel A. Robles-Santa, 25, of Juncos, Puerto Rico, and Spc. Deflin M. Santos Jr., 24, of San Jose, Calif.

KABUL, Afghanistan (April 8, 2013) – An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a facilitator with ties to multiple terrorist organizations during an operation in Ishkamish district, Takhar province, today.
The facilitator is believed to be an improvised explosive device expert who has done work for the Taliban and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan. He owns a residence suspected of being used exclusively for building and distributing IEDs for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He is also alleged to be heavily involved in the financial aspect of the insurgency, generating funding support of continued terrorist activities.

During another operation today in a different area of Ishkamish district, Takhar province, an Afghan and coalition security force killed Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan facilitator, Juma Khan. Khan utilized his residence as a staging point for IMU terrorists, offering safe haven and weapons storage for fighters as they prepared for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also had a history of procuring and distributing weapons and ammunition to his fellow insurgents. As a result of the operation, the security force also seized multiple grenades, one AK-47 with magazines, a pistol belt with magazines, and ammunition.

Matin was involved in a number of significant insurgency operations and was personally responsible for moving insurgent fighters into Afghanistan and directing their activities in Kunar province. He maintained operational control over a significant number of local fighters responsible for the execution of civilian supporters of the Afghan government, assassination attempts against Afghan National Security Force officials, and multiple attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

Afghan and coalition forces confirmed today the death of Taliban facilitator, Mullah Zakir Akhund, during an operation in Shibirghan district, Jowzjan province, Wednesday. Akhund was responsible for providing financial aid throughout multiple provinces, collecting taxes for the Taliban, overseeing a network of Taliban tax collectors and coordinating financial matters with other leaders. National Guard (In Federal Status) and Reserve Activated as of April 2, 2013
The Navy Reserve and Air Force Reserve announced this week a decrease in activated reservists while the Army National Guard, Army Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, and Air National Guard announced an increase of activated National Guard members and reservists. There is no change in the number of activated Coast Guard Reserve personnel. The net collective result is 315 additional National Guard members and reservists activated in comparison to last week.
At any given time, services may activate some units and individuals while deactivating others, making it possible for these figures to either increase or decrease. The total number currently on active duty from the Army National Guard and Army Reserve is 38,572; Navy Reserve, 4,362; Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, 8,680; Marine Corps Reserve, 2,601; and the Coast Guard Reserve, 540. This brings the total National Guard and Reserve personnel who have been activated to 54,755, including both units and individual augmentees.
The Department of Defense announced today recruiting and retention statistics for the Active and Reserve Components for fiscal year (FY) 2013 through February.
Active Component.
Recruiting. All four active Services met or exceeded their numerical accession goals for FY 2013 through February.
Army – 26,978 accessions, with a goal of 26,795; 101 percent
Navy – 14,007 accessions, with a goal of 14,007; 100 percent
Marine Corps – 11,131 accessions, with a goal of 11,112; 100 percent
Air Force – 11,874 accessions, with a goal of 11,874; 100 percent
Retention. The Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps exhibited strong retention numbers through the 5th month of FY 2013. The Navy exhibited strong retention numbers in the mid-career and career categories.However, the Navy's achievement of 88 percent in the initial category is a result of the transition from a downsizing to a stabilizing posture.
Reserve Component.
Recruiting. Five of the six Reserve Components met or exceeded their Fiscal-Year-To-Date (FYTD) 2013 recruiting goals. The Army Reserve finished February 1,410 accessions short of its FYTD goal.
Army National Guard – 21,186 accessions, with a goal of 20,664; 103 percent
Army Reserve – 10,531 accessions, with a goal of 11,941; 88 percent
Navy Reserve – 2,237 accessions, with a goal of 2,237; 100 percent
Marine Corps Reserve – 3,894 accessions, with a goal of 3,853; 101 percent
Air National Guard – 3,960 accessions, with a goal of 3,960; 100 percent
Air Force Reserve – 3,085 accessions, with a goal of 3,085; 100 percent
Attrition – All Reserve Components have met their FYTD attrition goals. Current trends are expected to continue. (Note: This indicator lags by a month due to data availability).

He and his subordinates are believed to have participated in numerous attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout Helmand province. He is also believed to have plotted the assassination of officials with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. The security force also seized one AK-47 and two magazines as a result of the operation.

KABUL, Afghanistan (April 1, 2013) – Afghan and coalition forces confirmed today the death of Panjwa’i district’s ranking Taliban official, Abdullah Wakil, during an operation in Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province, yesterday.
Wakil was running all Taliban operations in the district. He and his network were responsible for a significant number of insurgent activities, including the assassination of Afghan civilians, facilitating weapons and improvised explosive devices, and engaging in multiple attacks on Afghan and coalition forces.
