KABUL, Afghanistan (May 31, 2013) – Afghan and coalition security forces arrested a Taliban facilitator during an operation in Chimtal district, Balkh province, yesterday.

The facilitator is responsible for the movement of explosives and weapons in the Balkh province for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He collects illegal taxes from civilians to pay for weapons and has command and control over a cell of Taliban fighters responsible for multiple attacks in the local area.

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 30, 2013) – An Afghan and coalition security force arrested three insurgents during an operation in search of a senior Taliban leader in Archi district, Kunduz province, today.

The senior leader is responsible for constructing improvised explosive devices and suicide vests for use in insurgent operations. He has also directed and coordinated attacks in Archi district resulting in the deaths of numerous Afghan National Security Force personnel.

During the operation, a group of insurgents opened fire on the security force. The security force returned fire, killing three fighters.

The security force also seized two AK-47s, one sub-machine gun, one rocket-propelled grenade launcher and eight rocket-propelled grenades as a result of the operation.

RIP SPC Christopher R Drake

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Spc. Christopher R. Drake, 20, of Tickfaw, La., died May 26, in Bagram, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when his vehicle was attacked by a rocket propelled grenade. He was assigned to the 1084th Transportation Company, 165th Combat Support Sustainment Battalion, 139th Regional Support Group, Reserve, La.

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 27, 2013) – An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a senior Taliban leader and eight other insurgents during an operation in Nad ‘Ali district, Helmand province, today.

The senior leader oversees a direct action cell of fighters responsible for a series of attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in Nad ‘Ali and Marjeh districts. He is also responsible for procuring weapons for use in insurgent attacks and managing Taliban personnel actions in his area of operations.

The security force also seized two AK-47s and one rifle as a result of the operation.

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 26, 2013) – Kabul, Afghanistan – An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Haqqani high-profile attack facilitator and one other insurgent during an operation in Pul-e ‘Alam district, Logar province, today.

The facilitator is responsible for coordinating weapons, improvised explosive devices and suicide attackers for use in attacks targeting Afghan and coalition forces. He also houses transient Taliban commanders in his residence when they pass through his area of operations.

The security force also seized 25 kilograms of bomb-making material as a result of the operation.

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 25, 2013) – An Afghan and coalition security force killed eight insurgents during an operation in search of a senior Taliban leader in Achin district, Nangarhar province, today.

The leader has planned, coordinated and executed multiple attacks against Afghan government facilities, in addition to Afghan and coalition forces. He maintains operational control over numerous insurgent groups in the local area, and relays operational guidance from senior Taliban leadership to his fighters.

Afghan Local Police killed one Taliban insurgent and wounded two others while defending the Haji Safraz checkpoint in Archi district, Kunduz province, yesterday. Following the engagement ALP transferred custody of the dead and wounded insurgents into the custody of the Afghan Uniformed Police.

Provincial Response Company Ghazni, enabled by coalition forces, discovered a large cache of Potassium Chlorate, while conducting a cordon and search operation in Dey Yak district, Ghazni province, yesterday. The cache consisted of twenty 50 kg bags of Potassium Chlorate totaling 1000 kilograms. All seized items were destroyed on location.

The cache consisted of one IED, 170 kilograms (374 pounds) of ammonium nitrate, and 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of phosphorous fertilizer. All seized materials were destroyed on location.

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 23, 2013) – An Afghan and coalition security force killed three insurgents during an operation in search of a senior Haqqani leader in Sayyid Karam district, Paktiya province, yesterday.

The leader is directly involved with improvised explosive device attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He coordinates insurgent movement and attacks and provides information to senior Haqqani leaders. The leader facilitates the movement of IEDs, weapons and money into the local area.

The joint forces conducted the operation to construct a checkpoint near Qadir Qalay village, which was completed yesterday. The checkpoint will be used by ANSF to help secure areas north of the Upper Gereshk valley.

He also oversees weapons trafficking in the local area and reports on insurgent operations to ranking Taliban officials in Wardak province. The security force also seized one AK-47 and ammunition as a result of the operation.

Afghan Local Police and coalition forces found and destroyed a large explosives manufacturing laboratory during a joint patrol near Kashmiri Bala village, Baraki Barak district, Logar province, yesterday. The lab contained 36 kilograms (80 pounds) of potassium chloride, 34 kilograms (75 pounds) of ammonium nitrate, several hand grenades and two rocket-propelled grenade warheads. The joint force destroyed the structure and explosives after ensuring the safety of all civilians nearby.

BAGRAM, Afghanistan (May 22, 2013) - Afghan National Security and Coalition Forces killed 10 insurgents, detained four suspected insurgents and safely cleared six improvised explosive devices during operations in eastern Afghanistan throughout the past 24 hours, May 21.

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 21, 2013) – An Afghan and coalition security force wounded a senior Taliban leader and arrested one other insurgent during an operation in Zharay district, Kandahar province, today.

The senior leader is responsible for directing and executing attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He and his subordinates facilitate the movement of weapons and military equipment throughout Zharay district, in addition to constructing, distributing and emplacing improvised explosive devices, resulting in the death of Afghan civilians.

During the operation, the insurgent leader physically attacked the security force. The force engaged the individual in self-defense, wounding him.

He assassinated multiple village elders who had resisted his extortion activities. He also facilitated the movement of weapons and military equipment for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

An Afghan and coalition security force wounded one insurgent during an operation in search of a senior Taliban leader in Ghaziabad district, Kunar province, yesterday. The insurgent leader is responsible for relaying instructions from Taliban senior leadership to fighters in Nuristan district. He extorts money from local businesses in order to fund insurgent activity and coordinates attacks on Afghan government officials. He also actively recruits Taliban members in the local area and facilitates the movement of military equipment for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

An Afghan and coalition security force killed three insurgents during an operation in search of a senior Taliban leader in La’lpur district, Nangarhar province, yesterday. The leader is the ranking military official in Bati Kot district. He exercises operational control over a cell of fighters responsible for improvised explosive device attacks targeting Afghan and coalition forces. He facilitates the acquisition of IED making materials, constructs and emplaces IEDs, and trains other Taliban members on IED operations. He also recruits suicide bombers and is actively involved in kidnapping operations targeting Afghan officials.

RIP SGT Eugene M Aguon, SPC Dwayne W Flores

The Department of Defense announced today the death of two soldiers who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

They died May 16, in Kabul, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with a vehicle borne improvised explosive device. They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 294th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Fort Juan Muna, Guam.

Killed were:

Sgt. Eugene M Aguon, 23, of Mangilao, Guam, and

Spc. Dwayne W. Flores, 22, of Sinajana, Guam.

Obama Admin requests $2.34 Million per Troop in Afghanistan

By Jim Garamone, AFPS, WASHINGTON, May 20, 2013 - Defense Department officials (Obama political appointees) have submitted two funding-related requests to Congress, Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said here today.

Officials are seeking $79.4 billion in overseas contingency operations funding for fiscal year 2014 and are asking Congress to allow Pentagon officials to reprogram $9.6 billion in fiscal 2013 funding, Little said.

The reprogramming actions "are not meant to offset the effects of sequestration," he added.

The $9.6 billion request looks to fix large shortfalls in overseas contingency operations funding and larger than expected fuel bills, Little explained in a meeting with reporters.

"There are some wartime bills inside that reprogramming request," he said. "The main goal we're trying to achieve is limit the impact of sequestration on military readiness, particularly operations, training and maintenance accounts."

Little stressed the department is "trying to scrape for every penny, dime and nickel so we can achieve an additional $37 billion in cuts by the end of September." The reprogrammed money comes from some investment accounts and some military personnel accounts. They would shift to operations and maintenance accounts. DOD would like to see Congress act on the reprogramming request in the next three weeks, Little said.

The overseas contingency operations request usually is submitted at the same time the base budget is delivered to Congress. This year -- due to the fiscal uncertainty -- the base budget went to Congress in early April, and the overseas contingency funding request went to Congress on May 17.

Fiscal 2013's overseas contingency operations funding was $86.5 billion ($1,272,058.82/Troop). This year's $79.4 billion($2,335,294.12/Troop) reflects that the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan went from 68,000 to 34,000, and there has been a drop in the amount needed, Little said. Still, he added, "this is not about cost per troop."

Funding for troops in Afghanistan will continue, the press secretary said, and training the Afghan army and police remain a priority. The retrograde movement of materiel, supplies and equipment out of Afghanistan as U.S. forces draw down also costs money, he noted.

He also plans and executes assassinations against Afghan civilians, uses his residence as a staging point for insurgent operations, and facilitates weapons and military equipment for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

The security force also seized ammunition as a result of the operation.

The leader is responsible for the coordination and execution of attacks targeting Afghan and coalition forces in Sayyidabad district. He is involved in manufacturing and emplacing improvised explosive devices, in addition to procuring and distributing IED-making materials, weapons and military equipment for use in insurgent activities. The leader also oversees kidnapping operations against local Afghans.

The leader directs and executes attacks aimed at Afghan and coalition forces in Gardez district. He is also a known improvised explosive device expert, responsible for constructing and distributing IEDs to insurgent cells in his local area.

The security force also seized two bolt-action rifles and one AK-47 as a result of the operation.

He also facilitates the movement of weapons for use in insurgent activities and manages personnel decisions for the local Taliban network.

Afghan National Army Special Forces and coalition forces killed 12 insurgents while conducting a presence patrol in Qara Bagh district, Ghazni province, Friday. The joint patrol was near an ALP checkpoint in the vicinity of Qabargha village when insurgents engaged the force with small arms fire.

Afghan Local Police and Afghan Uniformed Police secured a weapons cache and coordinated for its controlled detonation in Deh Yak district, Ghazni province, Friday. Afghan Local Police, of the Laghawat checkpoint, received intelligence concerning the cache’s location and then called for an ANA Explosive Ordnance Disposal team to dispose of the cache. Fifty 107mm artillery shells and five rockets were among the items in the cache.

The security force also seized one pistol as a result of the operation.

An Afghan and Coalition security force arrested one insurgent and seized a weapons cache and a large quantity of narcotics during a cordon and search operation in Now Zad district, Helmand province, yesterday. The cache consisted 2500 kilograms (5511 pounds) of wet and dry opium, two AK-47 Rifles and 19 AK-47 magazines. All seized Items were destroyed on location.

Afghan Provincial Response Company Helmand, advised by coalition forces, arrested nine insurgents during a cordon and search operation in Lashkar Gah district, Helmand province, yesterday. The security force also seized an unknown quantity of ammunition as a result of the operation.

Afghan Provincial Response Company Farah, enabled by coalition forces, arrested seven insurgents and seized a cache of weapons while conducting an arrest in Push-E Rod district, Farah Province, yesterday. RIP SFC Jeffrey C Baker, SPC Mitchell K Daehling, SPC William J Gilbert

The Department of Defense announced today the death three soldiers who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

They died May 14, in Sanjaray, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device.

Killed were:

Sgt. 1st Class Jeffrey C. Baker, 29, of Hesperia, Calif., assigned to 766th Ordnance Company, 63rd Ordnance Battalion, 52nd Ordnance Group, Fort Stewart, Ga.

Spc. Mitchell K. Daehling, 24, of Dalton, Mass., and

Spc. William J. Gilbert, 24, of Hacienda Heights, Calif., both assigned to 3rd Battalion, 41st Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.

RIP SFC Trenton L Rhea

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Sgt. 1st Class Trenton L. Rhea, 33, of Oakley, Kan., died May 15, in Kandahar, Afghanistan, after drowning while attempting to cross a body of water during combat operations. He was assigned to the 603rd Military Police Company, 530th Military Police Battalion, 300th Military Police Brigade, 200th Military Police Command, Belton, Mo.

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 16, 2013) – An Afghan and coalition security force killed a senior Taliban leader, Shah Gul, during an operation in Chimtal district, Balkh province, yesterday.

Gul had operational control over a group of fighters responsible for numerous attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He was involved in kidnapping operations, procuring and distributing weapons and military equipment to insurgents in the local area, and collecting illegal taxes in order to fund insurgent activities.

An Afghan and coalition security force wounded one insurgent during an operation in search of a senior Taliban leader in Waygal district, Nuristan province, yesterday. The senior leader is the top military official for the Taliban in Waygal district. He is responsible for facilitating the movement of al-Qaida terrorists in Waygal district, erecting and enforcing illegal checkpoints, kidnapping Afghan officials and leading attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested four insurgents during an operation in search of a Haqqani leader in Zurmat district, Paktiya province, today. The leader participates in kidnapping operations in multiple districts throughout Paktiya province. He is also engaged in weapons trafficking for local terrorist cells and conducts investigations into insurgent activity at the behest of senior insurgent leadership. During the operation, a group of insurgents opened fire on the security force. The security force returned fire, killing one insurgent. The security force also seized two AK-47s, three fragmentation grenades, eight magazines and ammunition as a result of the operation.

The 2nd Special Operations Kandak and coalition forces killed a Taliban leader and detained six insurgents during a clearance operation in Deh Yak district, Ghazni province, yesterday. The Taliban leader was responsible for 20 insurgent fighters and had been facilitating improvised explosive device and indirect fire attacks in the Deh Yak district. All detainees were transferred to Afghan law enforcement officials.

BAGRAM, Afghanistan (May 16, 2013) - Afghan National Security and Coalition Forces killed 24 insurgents, detained nine suspected insurgents and found and safely cleared six improvised explosive devices during operations in eastern Afghanistan throughout the past 24 hours, May 15.

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 15, 2013) – An Afghan and coalition security force wounded a Taliban leader and killed two other insurgents during an operation in Qush Tepah district, Jowzjan province, yesterday. The leader has operational control over a group of fighters responsible for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in multiple districts throughout Jowzjan. He also engages in illegal taxation against Afghan civilians, provides training on improvised explosive device operations to his subordinates, and facilitates the movement of money, weapons and insurgent fighters in the local area. In other International Security Assistance Force news throughout Afghanistan: South Afghan National Army Special Forces, advised by coalition forces, detained eight insurgents and seized a large cache of homemade explosive during an operation in Panjwa’I district, Kandahar province yesterday. The cache consisted of 757 liters (200 gallons) of homemade explosive and several IED making materials. The detainees have been transferred to the Afghan Uniformed Police and all seized materials were destroyed on location. An Afghan Local Police quick reaction force responding to an attack on two separate ALP checkpoints killed one insurgent and wounded another in Andar district, Ghazni province, yesterday. The Afghan force engaged several insurgents, shortly after being dispatched from the District Operations Coordination Center, who were attacking the Rustam and Golo ALP checkpoints, using 82mm mortar and DSHKA fire. No Afghan Local Police were injured during this engagement. An Afghan quick reaction force killed two insurgents while responding to an attack on an ALP checkpoint in Gelan district, Ghazni province, yesterday. The QRF was dispatched after Afghan Local Police contacted the District Operation Coordination Center for assistance. Following the engagement the security force recovered two AK-47 rifles.

He was also involved in trafficking weapons and suicide vests, in addition to engaging in kidnapping and reconnaissance operations.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban facilitator during an operation in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, today. Afghan and coalition security forces confirmed today the arrest of a senior Taliban leader during an operation in Marjeh district, Helmand province, yesterday. Afghan National Army Special Forces enabled by coalition forces killed one insurgent and wounded another after they were observed emplacing an IED along a patrol route used by Afghan and Coalition Security Forces in Shindand district, Herat province, yesterday. Following the engagement two additional insurgents were killed by their own IED as they were traveling back toward the location of the first IED.

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 13, 2013) – An Afghan Uniformed Police quick reaction force killed three insurgents and wounded two others in Andar district, Ghazni province, yesterday.

The District Chief of Police dispatched the QRF after two Afghan Local Police contacted the District Operation Coordination Center for assistance. The two ALP members were surrounded and receiving small arms fire from 10 insurgents when the AUP arrived on location. Five insurgents retreated from the exchange.

This marks the second instance in less than 48 hours where multiple Afghan Security Force elements, working through the District OCC, combined efforts to defeat Taliban attacks against Afghan Local Police positions, a growing positive trend within the ANSF operational framework.

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 12, 2013) – An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a senior insurgent leader with ties to the Taliban and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan and one other insurgent during an operation in Burkah district, Baghlan province, today.

The senior leader is in charge of a group of fighters responsible for a wide range of insurgent activities. He and his cell have murdered Afghans, kidnapped Afghan civilians for ransom, conducted robberies against local businesses and collected illegal taxes in order to fund insurgent operations. He also facilitates the movement of weapons and suicide vests in the local area.

The security force also seized one AK-47, five rocket propelled grenades, seven RPG propellants, two fragmentary grenades, ammunition, six magazines and improvised explosive device making material as a result of the operation.

South

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested two insurgents during an operation in search of a senior Taliban leader in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, today. The senior leader oversees a number of insurgent cells responsible for attacks on Afghan and coalition forces. He and his subordinates are heavily involved in IED operations. He also directs the movement of weapons throughout Helmand province and interfaces with other insurgent leadership in order to report intelligence and receive strategic guidance for his network’s activities.

An Afghan and coalition security force killed a Taliban leader, Wahidullah Khan, killed one other insurgent, and detained two insurgents during an operation in Arghandab district, Kandahar province, today. Khan was in charge of a group of fighters responsible for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He was also involved in the facilitation of weapons and military equipment for his group of insurgents and directed night patrols in order to harass the local Afghan populace. During the operation, Khan and another insurgent opened fire on the security force. The security force returned fire, killing both. The security force also seized IED-making material, one AK-47, one pistol and four magazines as a result of the operation.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested two insurgents during an operation in search of a senior Taliban leader in Sayyidabad district, Wardak province, today. The senior leader has operational control of a group of approximately 70 insurgent fighters responsible for numerous attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in Sayyidabad district involving rocket-propelled grenades, IEDs and small arms. He also oversees weapons trafficking in the local area and reports on insurgent operations to ranking Taliban officials in Wardak province.

Commandos from 1st Company, 2nd Special Operations Kandak, advised by Coalition Forces, detained 28 insurgents during a clearing operation in the vicinity of Zaghun Shar village in Muhhamed Agha district, Logar province, Friday. The purpose of the operation was to disrupt insurgent activity in the area.

The senior leader is in charge of a cell of fighters responsible for direct and indirect-fire attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also coordinates improvised explosive device and suicide bomber operations throughout Kandahar province and is involved in insurgent weapons facilitation.

Afghan Provincial Response Company Zabul, enabled by coalition forces seized 160 kilograms (350 pounds) of ammonium nitrate, aluminum powder and several other IED making materials during cordon and search operations in the Shah Joy and Gelan districts of Zabul province, yesterday. The purpose of the operation was to disrupt insurgent networks and degrade lethal aid facilitation in the area. The seized IED making materials were destroyed on site.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Haqqani leader and one other insurgent during an operation in Zurmat district, Paktiya province, today. The leader has operational control over a cell of fighters responsible for multiple attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He is also involved in the construction and emplacement of IEDs throughout Paktiya province. The security force also seized one sub-machine gun, ammunition and IED-making material as a result of the operation.

Afghan National Army Special Forces and Coalition Forces killed one insurgent and wounded one other in Mehtar Lam district, Laghman province, Thursday. The joint forces were conducting a patrol to visit Afghan Local Police checkpoints along the Alingar valley when insurgents engaged the forces with indirect and small arms fire.

Responding to an attack on the Afghan Local Police, an Afghan Security Forces quick reaction force killed 10 insurgents in Qara Bagh district, Ghazni province, yesterday. The Afghan force engaged more than 30 dismounted insurgents armed with small arms and RPGs shortly after being dispatched by the district Operation Coordination Center. Following the engagement the security force recovered three motorcycles, two AK-47 rifles and one RPG.

Paktya Province
Afghan National Security and Coalition Forces detained one suspected insurgent and discovered one weapons cache during operations in the Laja Ahmadkhel District. The suspected insurgent was transferred to a base for questioning. The cache contained approximately 700 rounds of ammunition and one 107 mm rocket.

BALA BOLUK, Afghanistan (May 10, 2013) - Just a few days ago during an important operation focused on the control of their area of responsibility, the Italian Troops of Combined Team West discovered a powerful improvised explosive device.

The operation was conducted by Transition Support Unit South (TSU-S) in close coordination with the IED specialists from Italian 2nd engineer regiment and Task Force ‘SAW’ after acquiring information about suspicious activity by the insurgents.

When the units arrived on the spot they discovered a complex IED and, after securing the area to prevent any harm to civilians, the IEDD Team neutralized the main and the secondary charges. The complex IED was designed to injure Afghan civilians and then injure Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF).
In addition during a different operation, an Afghan National Army unit was directly involved in the disposal of an additional explosive device found in the Adraskan – district under the responsibility of the Transition Support Unit Center (TSU-C).

Both events represent a clear attempt by insurgents to destabilize the area and to discredit the Afghan National Security Forces’ capabilities. The enemies recognizes that the ANSF are growing their capability and professionalism everyday during the full transition to ANSF lead.
TSU-S is the maneuver unit of the Italian military contingent stationed in western Afghanistan, in charge of assisting and supporting the Afghan National Security Forces responsible for the security in Farah province.

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 9, 2013) – An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Haqqani attack facilitator and one other insurgent during an operation in Pul-e ‘Alam district, Logar province, today.

The facilitator is responsible for procuring and distributing weapons, improvised explosive device components and other military equipment to insurgents in Pul-e Alam district. He also coordinates logistics for insurgent training in the area. At the time of his arrest, he was actively planning a high-profile attack involving vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices and suicide bombers.

The security force also seized a pistol, two magazines, ammunition and IED-making material as a result of the operation.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested three insurgents during an operation in search of a high-ranking Haqqani leader in Ziruk district, Paktika province, today. The ranking Haqqani leader directs attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, to include attacks against government facilities in multiple provinces throughout Afghanistan, including Khost and Kabul. The security force also seized ammunition as a result of the operation.

Provincial Response Company Logar, enabled by coalition forces, detained four insurgents and discovered a cache of weapons and explosives-making materials while conducting a cordon and search operation in the village of Padkhvab-e Shana, Pul-e District, Logar Province, yesterday. The cache consisted of 15 Chinese 107 mm Rockets, one 82 mm recoilless rifle round and two 50 kg bags of 46% fertilizer. All seized items were destroyed on location.

BAGRAM, Afghanistan (May 8, 2013) - Afghan National Security and Coalition Forces killed one insurgent, discovered one weapons cache and found and safely cleared 10 improvised explosive devices during operations in eastern Afghanistan throughout the past 24 hours, May 7.

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 7, 2013) – An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban leader and three other insurgents during an operation in Lashkar Gah district, Helmand province, today.

The leader is in charge of a group of fighters responsible for a significant number of attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also regularly provides operational updates to senior Taliban leadership and distributes weapons to other insurgent cells in the local area.

He arranges the purchase of weapons for Taliban operations and coordinates training for new insurgents. He and his fighters are also responsible for multiple improvised explosive device attacks in the local area.

Afghan and coalition security forces confirmed today the death of Khialuddin, an insurgent leader with ties to the Taliban and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, during an operation in Baghlan-e Jadid district, Baghlan province, Sunday. Khialuddin, also known as Shahbudin or Karwan, directed improvised explosive device operations targeting senior government officials and Afghan and coalition forces in multiple districts throughout Baghlan province. He also worked directly with Taliban senior leadership to disseminate information to low-level fighters and was vital in facilitating money and weapons to insurgent groups in the local area.

South

Afghan National Army Special Forces and Afghan National Police, enabled by Coalition Forces, detained an improvised explosive device-maker and discovered an insurgent weapons cache while conducting a clearing operation in Katu village, Shinkai district, Zabul province, yesterday. The weapons cache consisted of three tactical vests, two rifles, several IED making materials and an unknown quantity of ammonium nitrate. All seized items were collected as evidence and remain in the custody of the Afghan National Police.

An Afghan and coalition security force seized a large quantity of narcotics at a vehicle search checkpoint in the western Dashte area of Helmand province, Sunday. The combined force searched several vehicles throughout the day and night, discovering 450 kg of wet opium and 6 kg of pure heroin with an estimated street value of $200,000. The security force also found and seized numerous small arms weapons as a result of the vehicle searches. All seized narcotics were destroyed onsite and the small arms weapons were recovered for further processing.

East

An Afghan and coalition security force wounded one insurgent during an operation in search of a Haqqani leader in Musa Khel district, Khost province, yesterday. The leader is responsible for weapons facilitation and plans direct fire attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He is known to conduct attacks on a regular basis, and he has coordinated the movement of improvised explosive devices, mortar rounds and other weapons throughout Musa Khel district.

An Afghan Local Police member apprehended a suicide bomber after an attempted attack on another ALP member in his home in Sar Howzah district, Paktika province, yesterday. Reportedly, the man entered the home, attempted to shoot the occupants with an AK-47 that misfired, and then attempted to detonate his suicide vest. The ALP member transferred custody of the attacker to the Afghan Uniformed Police for further processing.

Provincial Response Company Wardak, enabled by coalition forces, seized a large cache of explosives while conducting a recovery mission in Nerkh district, Wardak province, Sunday. Acting on Afghan intelligence sources the members of Provincial Response Company Wardak located and destroyed 544 kg (1,200 pounds) of homemade explosive.

The leader is responsible for a wide range of insurgent activities in Khugyani district. He has planned and directed assassinations against government officials, conducted multiple attacks targeting Afghan and coalition forces, and has facilitated the movement of money, weapons and insurgent fighters throughout the local area.

An Afghan and coalition security force killed one insurgent during an operation in search of a senior Taliban leader in Nahrin district, Baghlan province, today. The leader is the ranking Taliban military official in Nahrin district. He and his cell of insurgent fighters have conducted a campaign of assassinations in the district, collected illegal taxes from local civilians, and participated in multiple attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He is instrumental in training and familiarizing new fighters in the area and has a history of coordinating suicide attacks with local Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan terrorist groups. As the security force approached the leader’s suspected location, one insurgent maneuvered against the Afghan and coalition troops. After positively identifying the lethal threat, the security force fired upon the insurgent, killing him. The security force also seized a light machine gun and ammunition as a result of the operation.

He and his subordinates were involved in IED operations, poppy cultivation and distribution, and the facilitation of weapons in the local area. He also instructed his insurgent cell to kidnap members of the Afghan National Security Forces when conducting operations.

Afghan and coalition security forces confirmed today the death of Taliban leader, Mazloom, during an operation in Nawah-ye Barakzai district, Helmand province, April 25. Mazloom was involved in IED operations and direct fire attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He was also responsible for kidnapping an Afghan National Security Force soldier, training subordinate insurgent fighters and coordinating the movement of ammunition and weapons to Taliban forces.

BAGRAM, Afghanistan (May 6, 2013) - Afghan National Security and Coalition Forces killed three insurgents, detained eight suspected insurgents, discovered and destroyed one weapons cache, recovered one explosives vest and found and safely cleared 23 improvised explosive devices during operations in eastern Afghanistan throughout the past 24 hours, May 5.

The cache consisted of four RPG rockets, two pressure plates, 110 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, 5.5 kg (11 pounds) of opium and .5 Kg (5 Pounds) of hashish. All evidence was collected and transferred along with the six detainees to Afghan law enforcement officials.

The Department of Defense announced today the death of five soldiers who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

They died May 4, in Maiwand, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when their vehicle was attacked by an enemy improvised explosive device. The soldiers were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 36^thInfantry, 1^stBrigade Combat Team, 1^stArmored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.

Killed were:

RIP SSgt Eric D Christian, Cpl David M Sonka

The Department of Defense announced today the death of two Marines who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

They died May 4, while conducting combat operations in Farah province, Afghanistan. They were both assigned to 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Camp Lejeune, N.C. This incident is under investigation, as they were killed by an Afghan soldier.

Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Eric D. Christian, 39, of Warwick, N.Y., and

Cpl. David M. Sonka, 23, of Parker, Colo.

RIP Capt Mark T Voss, Capt Victoria A Picney, TSgt Herman Mackey III

The Department of Defense announced today the death of three airmen who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

They died May 3, near Chon-Aryk, Kyrgyzstan, in the crash of a KC-135 aircraft. The airmen were assigned to the 93rd Air Refueling Squadron, Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Killed were:

Capt. Mark T. Voss, 27, of Colorado Springs, Colo.,

Capt. Victoria A. Pinckney, 27, of Palmdale, Calif., and

Tech Sgt. Herman Mackey III, 30, of Bakersfield, Calif.

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 5, 2013) – An Afghan and coalition security force killed a Taliban leader, Qudrat, and arrested four other insurgents during an operation in Dand district, Kandahar province, today.

Qudrat was in charge of a cell of Taliban fighters responsible for improvised explosive device operations throughout Kandahar province. He and his group have a long history of building, emplacing and detonating IEDs targeting Afghan and coalition forces. He also facilitated the movement of weapons in the local area, and provided operational reports to senior leaders in the area.

As the security force approached Qudrat's suspected location, the insurgent leader moved to engage the Afghan and coalition troops. After positively identifying the lethal threat, the security force engaged Qudrat, killing him.

The security force also seized one pistol and a magazine as a result of the operation.

He also relays instructions from senior Taliban leaders to more than 100 fighters, disseminating orders for each group's area of responsibility. The insurgents were observed emplacing a rocket prior to the Afghan and coalition security force engaging.

Afghan Local Police, soldiers from the 6th Special Operations Kandak, and Coalition Forces killed more than eighteen insurgents after being attacked at ALP checkpoints in Nahr-e-Saraj district, Helmand province, yesterday. Insurgents directed large scale, complex attacks on Abdul Hadi and Torjan and Shin Gazy checkpoints with small arms, PKM, and recoilless rifle fire. The Nahr-e-Saraj District Chief of Police provided a quick reaction force to the Maktab checkpoint while the district Operations Coordination Center tasked the 6th SOK to support the fight in Zombalay. Coalition forces provided indirect fire in support of the quick reaction force.

Afghan Local Police and Coalition Forces detained Patkhel Village Mullah, Norullah, and one other insurgent, after finding them in the possession of 22 kg of improvised explosive making materials and three pressure plate training devices near Patkhel village in Shah Joy district, Zabul province, yesterday. The joint forces were patrolling the area after receiving reports that the village was being used as a training hub for Taliban fighters.

East

Afghan and coalition security forces confirmed today the arrest of a high-profile Taliban attack facilitator during an operation in Khugyani district, Nangarhar province, Friday. The facilitator provides logistical support to senior Taliban leaders throughout western Nangarhar province. He organizes the purchase, transfer and delivery of weapons to support the Taliban insurgency, and has sold rockets used in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

Afghan Local Police, advised by Coalition Forces, detained an improvised explosive device emplacer during a patrol in Baraki Barak district, Logar province, yesterday. The joint force was conducting a presence patrol when they discovered the individual as he was emplacing the IED. The ALP quickly detained the individual and transferred him to Afghan National Police custody.

Afghan National Security and Coalition Forces found and safely cleared one IED and detained one suspected insurgent during operations in the Baraki Barak District. The suspect was transferred to a base for questioning.

Paktika Province
Afghan National Security and Coalition Forces found and safely cleared one IED during operations in the Sar Hawza District.

Paktya Province
Afghan National Security Forces detained four suspected insurgents during operations in the Gardez District. The suspects were transferred to a base for questioning.

Parwan Province
Afghan National Security Forces found and safely cleared two IEDs and discovered one weapons cache during operations in the Koh-e-Safi District. The cache contained five grenades and more than 400 rounds of small-caliber ammunition.

War in Afghanistan News - 4 April 2013

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 4, 2013) – An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban leader and two other insurgents during an operation in Marjeh district, Helmand province, today.

The leader has operational control over a group of fighters responsible for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in multiple districts in Marjeh district. He is also key in facilitation of operations in the local area, procuring and distributing weapons and improvised explosive device components to his fighters for use in insurgent activities.

East

An Afghan and coalition security force killed a senior insurgent leader, Saleh Abd Al-Aziz Hamad al-Luhayb, during an operation in Waygal district, Nuristan province, Wednesday. Al-Luhayb, also known as Abu Sulayman, also known as Salman, was a known mortar and explosives expert who participated in attacks targeting Afghan and coalition forces. He was a key liaison and trainer to local insurgent commanders in Waygal district and led efforts to establish a permanent foreign fighter presence in the area.

Commandos from the 1st Special Operations Kandak, enabled by coalition forces, arrested a mid-level Taliban leader during an operation in Chaparhar district, Nangarhar province yesterday. This mid-level Taliban leader is involved in the narcotics trade and is responsible for improvised explosives device attacks against coalition forces and GIRoA officials throughout the region.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Haqqani facilitator during an operation in Gurbuz district, Khost province, today. The facilitator is responsible for trafficking weapons used in insurgent attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in districts throughout Khost province. He supplies multiple cells of Haqqani fighters. The security force also seized three AK-47s, one pistol, 10 magazines and over 1,000 rounds of ammunition as a result of the operation.

BAGRAM, Afghanistan (May 4, 2013) - Afghan National Security and Coalition Forces killed five insurgents, detained one suspected insurgent and found and safely cleared 13 improvised explosive devices during operations in eastern Afghanistan throughout the past 24 hours, May 3.

Ghazni Province
Afghan National Security and Coalition Forces found and safely cleared 13 IEDs during operations in the Gelan District.

Afghan National Security Forces killed two insurgents during operations in the Giro District.

Kunar Province
Afghan National Security Forces killed two insurgents and detained one suspected insurgent during operations in the Manogai District. The suspect was transferred to a base for questioning.

Paktika Province
Afghan National Security Forces killed one insurgent during operations in the Sharan District.
