KABUL, Afghanistan (May 21, 2013) – An Afghan and coalition security force wounded a senior Taliban leader and arrested one other insurgent during an operation in Zharay district, Kandahar province, today.
The senior leader is responsible for directing and executing attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He and his subordinates facilitate the movement of weapons and military equipment throughout Zharay district, in addition to constructing, distributing and emplacing improvised explosive devices, resulting in the death of Afghan civilians.
During the operation, the insurgent leader physically attacked the security force. The force engaged the individual in self-defense, wounding him.

Afghan and coalition forces confirmed today the death of a senior Taliban leader, Qari Adil, during an operation in Khanaqa district, Jowzjan province, Sunday. Adil, also known as Naymat, was responsible for illegal tax collection in Jowzjan and Balkh provinces. An Afghan and coalition security force wounded one insurgent during an operation in search of a senior Taliban leader in Ghaziabad district, Kunar province, yesterday. The insurgent leader is responsible for relaying instructions from Taliban senior leadership to fighters in Nuristan district. He extorts money from local businesses in order to fund insurgent activity and coordinates attacks on Afghan government officials. He also actively recruits Taliban members in the local area and facilitates the movement of military equipment for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
An Afghan and coalition security force killed three insurgents during an operation in search of a senior Taliban leader in La’lpur district, Nangarhar province, yesterday. The leader is the ranking military official in Bati Kot district. He exercises operational control over a cell of fighters responsible for improvised explosive device attacks targeting Afghan and coalition forces. He facilitates the acquisition of IED making materials, constructs and emplaces IEDs, and trains other Taliban members on IED operations. He also recruits suicide bombers and is actively involved in kidnapping operations targeting Afghan officials.
BAGRAM, Afghanistan (May 21, 2013) - Afghan National Security and Coalition Forces killed three insurgents, detained five suspected insurgents, discovered one weapons cache and found and safely cleared nine improvised explosive devices during operations in eastern Afghanistan throughout the past 24 hours, May 20.
