KABUL, Afghanistan (June 8, 2013) – An Afghan and coalition security force arrested two extremists during an operation in search of a senior Haqqani leader in Sayyid Karam district, Paktiya province, today.
The senior leader coordinates and executes attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also oversees the distribution and transportation of lethal aid for use in insurgent attacks and interfaces directly with top Haqqani officials in order to communicate strategic guidance to front-line fighters.
During the operation, the security force discovered a cache containing a significant amount of weapons and explosives. Weapons and explosives like the kind discovered are often used in attacks by insurgents that harm Afghan civilians. The security force moved civilians and livestock to a safe distance. They then executed a controlled explosion on the compound in order to destroy the cache. There was limited damage to two walls surrounding the cache site.
The security force also seized one AK-47, one shotgun, three magazines and ammunition as a result of the operation.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban leader and eleven other extremists during an operation in Nad 'Ali district, Helmand province, today. The leader oversees a group of extremists responsible for numerous attacks and assassinations targeting Afghan and coalition forces. He also facilitates the movement of weapons and military supplies in the local area, in addition to constructing and emplacing improvised explosive devices.
Afghan and coalition security forces confirmed today the death of a Taliban leader, Sadiq, during an operation in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, Wednesday. Sadiq was responsible for directing improvised explosive device, indirect fire and direct fire complex attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also interfaced directly with senior Taliban leaders, trained subordinate fighters on IED operations, and facilitated the movement of weapons and military equipment in the local area.

An Afghan and coalition security force killed one extremist and wounded one other during two operations in search of a senior Taliban leader in Darah-ye Pech district, Kunar province, yesterday. The senior leader is the top military official for the Taliban in Waygal district, Kunar province. He is responsible for facilitating the movement of al-Qaida members in Waygal district, erecting and enforcing illegal checkpoints, kidnapping Afghan officials and leading attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
An Afghan and coalition security force killed three extremists during two operations in search of an al-Qaida linked senior leader in Watahpur district, Kunar province, yesterday. The senior leader is responsible for al-Qaida training in Watahpur district. Senior al-Qaida leadership sends money, weapons, supplies and new recruits to him for instruction in terrorism operations. Following their training, the leader leads the fighters on attacks targeting Afghan and coalition forces.
An Afghan and coalition security arrested four extremists during an operation in search of a senior al-Qaida leader in Watahpur district, Kunar province, Thursday. The senior leader is responsible for al-Qaida operations in the Waygal and Watahpur Valley. He oversees al-Qaida training in Nuristan where he provides improvised explosive device, artillery and counter-interrogation technique training to insurgents. He also plans and conducts IED, indirect fire and direct fire attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
