Story by Sgt. Kyle Wagoner
HELMAND PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan Local Police repelled insurgent attacks against multiple checkpoints in Mirmandab and killed one insurgent in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, July 12.
Approximately 12 Taliban forces attacked three checkpoints simultaneously with small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. The ALP returned fire with small arms and machine guns, killing one enemy.
Afghan Local Police complement counterinsurgency efforts by assisting and supporting rural areas with limited Afghan National Security Forces presence, enabling conditions for improved security, governance and development.
Upon learning of the attacks, the Nahr-e Saraj district chief of police, Capt. Saymand Hekmatullah, coordinated to reinforce the checkpoints with additional police officers through the Nahr-e Saraj District Operational Coordination Center, causing the Taliban forces to cease their attack and retreat from the areas.
The coordination of Afghan police forces supporting each other in the fight against the insurgency shows progress as Afghan security forces assume the lead for security across the district and Helmand province.
