VOA News Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010 U.S. officials have indicted three men, including two U.S. citizens, on charges of providing material support to the Somali terror group al-Shabab.
The Justice Department said Wednesday that Mohamud Abdi Yusuf of Missouri and Minnesota resident Abdi Hussein conspired to transfer money to the terror group.
The indictment alleges that from 2008 through 2009, Yusuf used
A third man, identified as Duwayne Mohamed Diriye, is charged with receiving and distributing the funds from inside Somalia and Kenya. He remains at large.
On Tuesday, U.S. federal prosecutors indicted three California residents on similar charges.
The State Department designated al-Shabab a terrorist organization in 2008.
Al-Shabab and other Islamist insurgent groups have been battling Somalia’s United Nations-backed transitional government for control of the capital, Mogadishu. They are trying to topple the leadership and set up a strict Islamic state.
Somalia has not had a stable, functioning central government since 1991. Although the current government has international backing, it controls only a few areas of the capital with the support of African Union peacekeepers
